PROJECT KNOWLEDGE- Day 14

Day 14: Hilton Head Benefit!

Our incredible host, Susan, planned an action packed day for us, beginning with a breakfast of fruit and homemade banana bread! Our first activity of the day was a visit to the Fraser Health Center which Susan frequents every monday to play bingo and bring chocolate to the residents. For an hour we sang old standards and show tunes, and Randi even did a few tap dance numbers for them! We're so happy we had the opportunity to connect with the Fraser community, and share such a special afternoon!

We then stopped at the Jiva Yoga Center (where the benefit was being held) to take a yoga class with our new friend Vicky who is an incredible instructor. After an hour of yoga and a quick perusal of the space, we grabbed a quick dinner and returned to Susan's house to get ready for our 8:00 benefit!

Susan organized the entire benefit for us, providing wine and hors d'oeuvres, and doing all the advertising and publicity in the local paper. To hold up our end of the bargain, all we had to do was literally show up and perform! At 8:00 the guests arrived for the reception to socialize and partake of the wine and the healthy and delicious food made by a local chef, Patty Lipkins. Local high schoolers, Ella, Brenna, Laura, Haley, and Marissa did a fantastic job of passing out the refreshments and greeting guests.

A special thanks to Jean and Ken Rio for donating their yoga studio for our event! It was the first time we have ever performed a benefit show in a non-theatre type space. It proved to be a really awesome experience. Everyone had to take off their shoes to enter the studio, and since there weren't many chairs, our guests sat on yoga bolsters and blankets. During the performance, Randi even put a wooden plank on top of a yoga mat so she could tap dance!!! The evening was a great success as we were able to share our company's goals and mission with a lot of people who weren't familiar with us prior to the event!

We are so grateful to Susan and her family for their incredible generosity and hospitality during our stay. We are so sad to leave, but we have to get on the road to Asheville, NC!

Agua Viva Guarderia (Living Waters Day Care)

On May 21st, 2009 we were blessed to coordinate with another local charity to bring our love and service to the children of Agua Viva Guarderia, a free daycare center & feeding program for the working poor, indigenous families.

Many children born to poor, single parents are given to orphanages or children's homes because the parent must work to provide food and shelter and they have no one to watch their children. Paid day care is not an option since their earnings are very meager. They give their children to orphanages with the intention of returning for them very shortly but, sadly, they rarely ever get "ahead" enough to come back to get them and the parental bonds are
lost or broken.

It is the goal of Agua Viva to keep families together by providing childcare and a full feeding program. Education is also provided both through their own staff, and by providing transportation to & from public schools.

It was inspiring to witness first-hand the exceptional care the program provides for 130 children daily. We had an incredible day sharing our music, dance, art and running around the playground with them! We will also be taking part in a fundraiser for Agua Viva, "Golf For Ninos", on June 13th. It is our hope that we can continue to support this wonderful organization.

The Transcendence Artist project-WEEK 8

On April 24, 2009, the children of Casa De Paz orphanage were treated to their own special theatrical performance by The Transcendence Theatre Company at The Gertrude Pearlman Theatre. It was an incredibly moving and legendary day for all. The children had never been to a theatre before and it was mesmerizing for all of us to experience the immense joy that was shared onstage and off. It was a truly magical experience. This very special show was themed around sharing our love for theatre with the kids. Before each number, every actor shared why they loved theatre with the audience. The theatre was truly alive with dancing, singing, juggling, puppet shows, and even the crowd favorite... A Project Runway extravaganza. Our show ended with a very special movie we made for the children filled with memories from our trip to the orphanage. The laughter, applause, tears, and happiness that was experienced in the theatre on this special day was undoubtedly one of the greatest moments of our entire lives. After the show, we all had an amazing dinner and ended this perfect day by watching the sunset on the beautiful oceans of Punta Banda. A special thanks to all of the community members who helped us serve an amazing meal to these adorable kids. This day was the best day ever by far times 14 million! We love these children more than words can say and are so blessed that they are our forever friends.

Theatre In The Green with Michael Crowley

During the last week of March 2009, the artists of Transcendence Theatre Company turned their attention toward a topic that has been growing in importance across the globe: the environment. Using the beauty of Punta Banda, Mexico as a backdrop, I had the pleasure of working with Transcendence’s passionate company members to use their creative spirits to explore our planet’s pressing ecological issues.

Our work began with a discussion of what it means to be an “eco-artist”: What can a theatre professional do to ensure that their art is in harmony with the land upon which it’s created? What are the ecological issues affecting the arts community? Are there certain materials theatrical professions should (and shouldn’t) be using, to ensure a safe and healthy environment for artists and audiences? The Transcendence Theatre Company members took the “Verdant Artist Pledge”, promising to reuse scrap paper during the rehearsal process, ensure that colleagues are recycling backstage and in artist housing, utilize organic make-up alternatives, and work with costume staff members to use organic cleaning processes.

After discussing the environmental impact of the energy-intensive act of theatrical production, we began a dialogue about “eco-art”. Transcendence Artists read short plays that addressed various ecological topics. Arthur Miller said, “The job of the artist is to remind people of what they have chosen to forget.” Most of today’s audiences have forgotten their relationship with the environment - actors, dancers, directors, playwrights and designers have the ability to use their art from to help patrons find the missing connection between the natural and cultural worlds. For a company dedicated to holistic artistic creation, developing works that include environmental considerations seemed like a no-brainer to the Transcendence Artists. I challenged the company to think anew about songs and monologues that they have cherished throughout their artistic lives. Highlighting a natural element in popular song or speech can instantly help audience members embrace the green movement.

As the company prepared their eco-art pieces for our community performance, I headed to local Mexican retailers to purchase environmentally friendly upgrades for the Gertrude Pearlman Theatre. For example, installing compact fluorescent lightbulbs (which use ¼ the energy of traditional bulbs) in backstage areas will reduce the theatre’s energy bill and allow the theatre to put that money into programming and educational initiatives. Additionally, swapping the theatre’s traditional (toxic) cleaning products with organic materials will create a safer environment for future inhabitants in the space.

With no curbside recycling in Mexico, we had to do some investigative research into recycling collection. A synchronicity drew two company members to a nearby school that had set up its own recycling program. The school staff members gladly agreed to take the theatre’s recyclables. We took this discovery as a sign, and set up recycling receptacles at the Pearlman, so that artists and patrons could help reduce the waste stream attributed with the fantastic shows presented in the space.

After completing a greenovation of the Pearlman, it was time to share our work with the community. On March 28th, in honor of Earth Hour 2009, the Transcendence Theatre Company presented “Teatro de Verdes”, an evening of environmentally themed music, plays and dances. Audience members were encouraged to take a free CFL lightbulb (or two), as well as candles – in hopes that they would turn off the lights in their homes during Earth Hour. All donations from the event were given to Zonas Verdes de Punta Banda, a local non-profit environmental education organization.

Following the eco performance, audience members were invited to join the company onstage for a candlelit discussion during Earth Hour. Once all of the lights (and power) were turned off, company members led the audience in theatre games. The event quickly turned serious, as company members commented on local seals that were being poached by tuna fishers. One Punta Banda resident used our hour in the dark to educate participants about the history of the environmental crisis in Southern California and Punta Banda. Who knows? Maybe there’s a play in there somewhere!

After a week of ecological artistic exploration, company members and local residents headed to the beach for a major clean up effort. What a perfect way to end a week that began with the question: “What can an artist do to ameliorate our planet’s pressing ecological issues?” Be it greening backstage areas, using sustainable materials in the production process, creating new works that explore environmental issues, or simply taking care of the land upon which their artistic work is created (as was the case with the beach cleanup), Transcendence Artists will forever include environmental thinking into their artistic endeavors.

Transcendence Artist Project-Week 6

This week we learned the philosophy of Anusara yoga with our yoga specialists Matt and Jen. Through this practice we explored the idea that the body/mind is a gift to help us discover our glory, our greatness, and our worthiness to experience the highest sense of freedom. Anusara yoga was a perfect discipline for our minds, bodies, and spirits!

In addition to practicing yoga, we engaged in another service project with a family who is dedicated to feeding the impoverished children of Maneadero, Mexico. We helped serve the children breakfast and had a wonderful time playing games and singing songs together. As we dedicate ourselves more and more to serving the local community, our love and unity as a group grows. We are so grateful we have been able to make service to others the major focus and underlying purpose of all that we do!

Transcendence Artist Project- WEEK 5- Casa de Paz

This week The Transcendence Theatre Company focused on doing what we love, with the people we love, in service to the world. April 4, 2009 was a life changing and life empowering experience for all of us as we spent a day with the children of Casa De Paz Orphanage. We teamed up for a day of fun with our friends Prabhat Gautam and Carolina Quezada and a group of volunteers from Los Angeles who work closely with an amazing organization called Corazon De Vida. (www.corazondevida.org) Casa De Paz houses 45 children including a number of special needs children. We spent the day playing interactive theatre games filled with themes of passion and joy. The kids truly loved laughing as they sang and danced amidst getting their face painted and sending balloon animals soaring into the air! At the end of this perfect day we invited the children to their own special performance at The Gertrude Pearlman Theatre that will take place on April 25. Our experience at Casa de Paz was by far one of the most memorable moments of our lives. Our week concluded on another high note as we donated all of our proceeds from our encore production of “Living A New Dream” to financially sponsor a high school education for two underprivileged children in Punta Banda. It has been an unstoppable week for all of us! We are so grateful that everyday we are inspired by all of the amazing people we meet in this incredible community!
